The WRF is receiving regular updates and advice from health experts. As reported by ICF “the virus has already caused severe disruption to sporting events around the world”, however so far canoeing and rafting program has not been impacted (read the ICF statement).

The WRF has no events scheduled in China this year.

The WRF will continue to follow the advice of WHO, as the leading United Nations agency on this topic.

The WRF encourages all athletes to continue to prepare for the Sport Season and take care of their health and protect others by doing the following:

Wash your hands frequently

Regularly and thoroughly clean your hands with an alcohol-based hand rub or wash them with soap and water.

Why? Washing your hands with soap and water or using alcohol-based hand rub kills viruses that may be on your hands.

Maintain social distancing

Maintain at least 1 metre (3 feet) distance between yourself and anyone who is coughing or sneezing.

Why? When someone coughs or sneezes they spray small liquid droplets from their nose or mouth which may contain virus. If you are too close, you can breathe in the droplets, including the COVID-19 virus if the person coughing has the disease.

Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth

Why? Hands touch many surfaces and can pick up viruses. Once contaminated, hands can transfer the virus to your eyes, nose or mouth. From there, the virus can enter your body and can make you sick.

Practice respiratory hygiene

Make sure you, and the people around you, follow good respiratory hygiene. This means covering your mouth and nose with your bent elbow or tissue when you cough or sneeze. Then dispose of the used tissue immediately.

Why? Droplets spread virus. By following good respiratory hygiene you protect the people around you from viruses such as cold, flu and COVID-19.

If you have fever, cough and difficulty breathing, seek medical care early

Stay home if you feel unwell. If you have a fever, cough and difficulty breathing, seek medical attention and call in advance. Follow the directions of your local health authority.

Why? National and local authorities will have the most up to date information on the situation in your area. Calling in advance will allow your health care provider to quickly direct you to the right health facility. This will also protect you and help prevent spread of viruses and other infections.

On this website (https://www.who.int/emergencies/diseases/novel-coronavirus-2019) you can find information and guidance from WHO regarding the current outbreak of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) that was first reported from Wuhan, China, on 31 December 2019. Balkans are calling: Bulgaria Grand Prix, straight after Slunj

Whitewater is already calling from the Balkans: 2 months and we’ll be back in the water!

From 20th to 22th March Croatia will open the WRF season with the Euro Cup in Slunj, where Korana river flows straight into the Slunjčica, drawing the amazing waterfalls we fell in love with 2 years ago, at the first WRF event in 2018.

The beginning of the season will not stop there for many rafters: Bulgarian teams will go straight from Slunj to their National Champs, but not alone.

The Struma river will host the first Grand Prix of the World Rafting year: from 27th to 29th March Slalom, RX and Downriver will not only decide the Bulgaria’s names you will meet in Solkan at the World Champs, but also inaugurate the international season for the National teams who will join the event. Every National team is warmly invited to paddle in the Kresna Gorge, where the whitewater flows from the Vitosha mountains into the 3rd level rapids of a 18 kms green natural scenario.

Always Moving Forward!

The World Champs of Para-Rafting are over: the RX discipline decided the first Overall Champions in history.

Iarysh Denis, Potanin Viktor (RUS), Salvatore Cutaia (ITA) and Igor Bondar (UKR) confirmed the 1st place in the Amputee category: the 120 points of RX gold guaranteed to them the Overall victory in the final against the Italians Giandinoto Massimo, Montagna Marco, Novella Riccardo and Sperandini Rosario (1.30-1.32.77 seconds).

The Open Category’s RX final B was taken by Plotnikov Dmitry (RUS), Pavlovic Andjela, Ivanovic Marina (SRB) and Bedokurov Gled (UKR) (Bronze Overall). The final A confirmed the Overall results: gold for Romanenko Oleg, Konovalov Denis, Galdin Andrei (RUS) and Chemeris Yuriy (UKR); silver for Burakov Eduard (RUS), Ivanovic Marco, Ilic Milos (SRB) and Markovsky Illy (UKR).

Giandinoto Massimo, Sperandini Rosario (ITA), Konovalov Denis and Galdin Andrei (RUS) are the Overall Champions of the Mix category, winning the 3 different disciplines. The only two girls of the competition (Pavlovic Andjela and Ivanovic Marina) are on the second step of the podium (RX and Overall) with Iarysh Denis and Potanin Viktor (RUS). The RX bronze confirmed the Overall 3rd place for Novella Riccardo, Montagna Marco (ITA), Ivanovic Marco and Ilic Milos (SRB) who won the final B against Salvatore Cutaia (ITA), Igor Bondar, Markovsky Illy and Bedokurov Gleb (UKR).

Most of the athletes are competitors in other sports.

“My left foot has been amputated when I was 9” explains Massimo Giandinoto (winner of the Mix Category) “and since then I have been considering every day of my life as a challenge. At 26 years old I started running and filling my days with sport (He is a 100m and 200m athlete). 3, then 4, then 5 days a week until, training every day, I won the Italian title of 60m and 200m dashes. I first tried Rafting for fun but then the same happened: wearing the National flag is a dream come true; doing it with a team is something unique, paddling together literally in the same boat is priceless.”

“And it is only the beginning” declares the WRF President Danilo Barmaz “These athletes are THE example of what “Always moving forward” means. A warm thanks to every person who paddled on Dnieper river and has been a part of this historic race, directed by the judges Mr Vladmir Petukhov from Russia and the WRF Vice-President Boris Purjakov”.

It is definitely the beginning for the deaf team from Serbia: Andjela Pavlovic writes “Last July we first paddled in a river, we trained for 2 months and competed in Zubin Potok at the World Cup and we are happy about the results here. We are a volleyball team and we often participate in international tournment: now we train out of the water focusing on a match in Poland on 26 October, but we are looking forward to see what Rafting will show us.”

Bhotekoshi selected the 2020 Nepal team

Nepal National team has been selected!

Last November the rapids of Bhotekoshi already saw many rafters paddling during the18th Himalayan Whitewater Challenge. Now, from 20th to 24th February, Nepal Rafting & Canoeing Association set up the 4th National Rafting Championship, concurrently with the 8th National Kayak Slalom Championship, on the Tibetan River. 14 teams competed in the section of the Sukute village, in the Sindhupalchok district, coming from different corners of the country including various clubs, river operator companies and the Nepal Army.

Nepal Kayak Club took the first place in the Downriver that guaranteed a second place overall to the team. With a bronze in the downriver but a gold in the other disciplines Nepal Raft & Kayak Club Fislhing A is the 2020 National Champion and the Nepal flagship for the next international competitions. Third step of the podium taken by Paddle Nepal A team.

We can’t wait to see these rafter from Trishuli river at our races: see you in India at the Asian Championship and in Slovenia for the Worlds!

Bhotekhosi, whitewater challenge of Nepal

From 26th to 28th November the Nepal Rafting and Canoeing Association organised the 18th Himalayan Whitewater Challenge on Bhotekoshi River, East of Kathmandu. 16 teams participated and paddled the 4th level rapids of the Tibetan river (“bhoṭiyā” means Tibetan and “kosi” means river), the steepest whitewater rafted in Nepal with a an elevation source of 8012 m and a gradient of 15 m per km.

The first team to cross the finish line was KapileswarAmb, followed by Sindhu Parlatan and Balephi M Vidalaya and we’ll probably see athletes from these extreme teams representing Nepal in India at the Asian Championship of the next November: India 2020.

Gates on Dnieper river: Para-Rafting Slalom in Kiev

8 gates in the center of Kiev selected the first Slalom Para-Rafting World Champions this afternoon. 12 teams paddled through 8 downstream and 4 upstream gates for two manches in Dnieper river.

Precious seconds depended on penalties arising from the red upstream gates: no team missed any gate (that would add a 50 seconds penalty) but the 5 seconds penality concerning the touch of a gate changed some positions in the provisional general results.

100 points to Italy, Russia-Kazakhstan and Russia-Serbia who took the gold in the three Paralympic categories:

Amputee: Giandinoto Massimo, Sperandini Rosario, Montagna Marco and Novella Riccardo. 3.03.19 seconds.

Open: Romanenko Oleg, Konovalov Denis, Galdin Andrey (Rus) and Baranov Egeo (Kaz). 3.23.96 seconds.

Mix: Potanin Victor, Iarysh Denis, Romanenko Oleg and Plotnikov Dmitrii (Rus) 2.53.21 seconds, the one and only team under 3 minutes.

Tomorrow is the last race day and the teams will paddle for the last 120 points that will determinate the first Over-All Para-Rafting World Champions.

Argentina opened the 2020 sport season: Panamerican Rafting Cup results

The WRF agonistic season is open! Argentina hosted the first event of the 2020 sport season: 16 teams participated in the PanAmerican 2019-2020 Rafting Cup held on 16th, 17th and 18th November, concurrently the National Kayak Championships.

Torrentes team from Argentina won the gold with the home court advantage in the U23 Men Category, home called Ruka Choroy and Aluminé rivers (both 3rd/4rd level): Tomas Ermocida, Franco Zapata, Gaston Magaña, Arian Torres and Tomas Capelari.

The Open Men, Oper Women and Mix Category were taken by the one week old National Champions of Chile: Araucanos (Christian Huenchuleo, Matias De Ferrari, Anand Heredia Valdes and Lorenzo Gomez), Loicas (Nicole Plagemann, Tabata Araya, Yarela Munoz, Cony Molina and Camila Ortega) and Galacticos (Nicole Plagemann, Yarela Munoz, Christian Huenchuleo and Matias De Ferrari), selected at the beginning of November, seem ready for the 2020 season, especially for the Continental Championships that their country will organise next season.

Now it’s time to train, because the countdown to the Continental Champs is already started and Solkan 2020 is waiting for you all.

The First Para-Rafting Championships ever

For the first time in Rafting history Para-athletes are competing in a worldwide Rafting Championships.

Today rafters from 5 countries opened the event in Kiev with the Downriver, divided in 3 categories: R4 LTA (Amputee, Class 3: legs, torso, arms can work), Open Category (Visual Impairment Class B3, Hearing Impairment – Deaf athletes and Down Syndrome) and the Mix Category that combine different disabilities to challenge the Dnieper river from a new perspective.

The fastest raft stopped the Downriver chronometer winning the Amputee Category: Viktor Potanin (Rus), Denis Iaris (Rus), Igor Shovkievski (Ukr) and Salvatore Cutaia (Ita).

With 11.08.52 seconds they had almost a minute of advantage on the Amputee Silver: the Italian team of Massimo Giandinoto, Marco Montagna, Riccardo Novella and Rosario Sperandini (12.01.29 seconds: second best time of the day).

Three Paralympic rafters and one normo athlete formed every team of the Open Category: 13.49.85 seconds took Denis Konovalov, Andrey Galdin, Oleg Romanenka (from Russia) and Egoro Baranov (from Kazakhstan) to the first step of the Category podium.

For Andjela Pavlovic and Marina Ivanovic Kiev is the second World Rafting competition: the deaf team from Serbia competed for the first time in Kosovo one month ago at the World Cup; but in Zubin Potok they paddled in the only Para-Rafting team present. Now they are only two girls participating in Kiev and this morning, with Viktor Potanin and Denis Iaris from Russia, they took the deserved gold of the Mix Category (12.29.35 seconds).

It is no more a dream, but rather a real project, a new great adventure for our Rafting World and today was only the beginning.

UPDATE – Coronavirus COVID-19 Impacts to IRF Events

Contrary to rumours being released by IRF detractors, the IRF is still actively pursuing our WRC, ERC, ECs and WCs this year along with our GTE activities. The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic continues to wreak havoc on the worldwide international sporting calendar, and the IRF calendar is no exception. Our immediate concern is for events coming up in the next 8 weeks as government and health authorities react in various ways to contain or mitigate the spread of the virus with protective measures. The situation is changing daily. Nobody today can say what the developments are tomorrow, what they are in one month, and certainly not several months into the future. The IRF will not be making irresponsible decisions to change our competition calendar based on speculation. We urge all competitors to stay in touch with their National Federation and to keep watch for updates to this post and to our published calendar.

  • Balkan White Water Safety Summit in Bosnia and Herzegovina – still proceeding according to plans.
  • WRC 2020 in Guilin, Ziyuan China – China (population 1.4 billion) is typically reporting less than 20 new COVID-19 cases a day (all from travelers from abroad). Chinese authorities are now more concerned about infected foreigners entering the country than community spread cases within China. Ziyuan County, site of the IRF World Rafting Championship (WRC) event, has told us they have zero infections because the virus has never entered their county, making it one of the safest rafting event locations in the world. We are considering different contingency scenarios, but the IRF WRC is unlike our other events and many other sport championships in that it is scheduled five months away. Local officials in Ziyuan report that they are moving forward at full speed to prepare for the competition as planned!
  • ERC 2020 in Czech Republic – is scheduled for June, when the peak number of COVID-19 cases in Europe are expected to be past. We will be monitoring the situation carefully, in concert with event organisers and local health authorities.
  • EC and WC events – will proceed as appropriate according to decisions made by local organisers and their respective government and health authorities. The immediate concern is the few EC events coming up in the next 5 weeks, which will likely coincide with the peak number of COVID-19 cases appearing in Europe. The new IRF EC event in Italy, and our traditional EC Wildalpen Austrian event were cancelled as per organiser/IRF joint decisions and government mandates. The Italian government has imposed a total lockdown on all nonessential movement, events and social contact. The Austrian government has halted all outdoor events of more than 500 people, and enacted a border closure with Italy. We extend our warmest thanks and appreciation to our Italian and Austrian friends and the many IRF teams that have been hard at work training and preparing for these events.

UPDATE – 18 March 15:00 GMT:

1. Our IRF member British Canoe has decided to cancel all upcoming scheduled events due to the spreading of COVID-19 in Great Britain and in anticipation of government restrictions on sport activities. This cancellation will include the IRF 2020 National Selection (NS) event for Great Britain. The IRF will be working closely with the NS event organisers to determine dates for a rescheduled event as soon as possible.

2. The IRF GTE Committee have decided to postpone the annual IRF GTE Instructor’s Conference scheduled for 27th to 29th April 2020 in Châteauroux-les-Alpes, France . The postponement is due to the uncertainty surrounding recent decisions made by many countries to close their borders and restrict travel, and the recent decision by the European Union to seal its borders to most outsiders. This is obviously an extremely unfortunate situation and we are saddened that our instructors will not be able to attend our annual gathering, but we wanted to announce this decision at the earliest opportunity to enable plans to be adapted accordingly for all concerned. The GTE Committee will begin to look at alternative dates and/or locations in anticipation that a 2020 Conference can be held at a future date.

UPDATE – 14 March 08:00 GMT:

Organisers for the Latvian Water Tourism Championship have informed us that the Latvian government has issued a state of emergency until April 14 due to COVID-19. All events larger than 200 persons are banned during this time. The IRF supports the organisers in their decision to postpone the event indefinitely.

As always, the health and safety of the IRF family remains our first priority. The IRF will continue to follow the information and guidance of the World Health Organisation (WHO), as the United Nations agency that is leading the world on this issue. The WHO has declared a COVID-19 pandemic, not a ‘panic-demic’. Pandemics are declared to raise awareness, anytime a new disease for which people do not have immunity spreads around the world beyond expectations. Panic can defeat the purpose of raising awareness.

The IRF will act according to the science-based evidence gathered by WHO. We will not issue blanket proclamations or unilaterally suspend all IRF events. We support all our event organisers and teams across the globe, and will continue to respond to the pandemic with appropriate measures – without misrepresentation, over-hype, or panic. Government restrictions placed on event gatherings, which may or may not be based on WHO recommendations, will be followed in accordance to law.

WHO asks all countries to “strike a balance between protecting health, preventing economic and social disruption, and respecting human rights.” WHO advises that the vast majority of healthy individuals with a strong immune system will experience only mild symptoms if infected, and the risk of infection associated with outdoor public gathering (greater ventilation) is relatively low compared to indoor gatherings. So we encourage everyone to keep healthy, get plenty of clean, fresh air, and closely follow the WHO COVID-19 advice for the public. Rafting is outdoors, safer than the gym. If you chose to step outside to go rafting, please follow WHO’s advice on social distancing and any legal restrictions put in place by government officials. Let’s remain positive while we focus on our health and safety – the world needs positivity to get us through this difficult time.

The latter half of the year is starting to fill up with events – but in the meantime, watch our website for the most up-to-date race and GTE event details across the globe. Always check with us for what is real when rumours are flying around!
